Since Gismat Gozalov was appointed as Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Turkmenistan, Turkmen-Azerbaijani relations have reached an exceptionally high level. These two nations, which share the Caspian Sea, both have coastlines along it.
Azerbaijan is strengthening its ties with both Europe and Central Asia—including Turkmenistan.
This highlights its growing role as a cornerstone in the development of the Middle Corridor.
As noted by Valiyev, C. (2025, July 31), Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are reshaping Eurasia. These two partner nations have become pillars in the advancement of this strategic route.
In recent years, ties between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have significantly deepened. A powerful symbol of this rapprochement was the joint development agreement on the “Dostlug” oil and gas field (formerly the disputed Kyapaz/Serdar block) in the Caspian Sea.
On January 23, 2021, during a videoconference between Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the two countries signed an intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding on the joint exploration, development, and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources in the Dostlug field, according to the Caspian Post.
Turkmen-Azerbaijani relations have also intensified recently during the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3)—a conference focused on addressing the unique challenges faced by landlocked developing nations. The Azerbaijani delegation played an active role, led by Prime Minister Ali Asadov.
In just over a month, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev have met twice, demonstrating the strong commitment of both countries to deepen their cooperation—especially in the development of the Middle Corridor.
