New PM of Great Britain vows to restore stability

Andy Burnham who became the new prime minister of UK, in a speech outside Downing Street promised to restore the political stability and to resolve the cost-of-living crisis from which a lot of families suffer.

Burnham replaced Keir Starmer and has become the 7th prime minister of UK in a decade. He promised to introduce a 10-year plan with the goal of restoring the country which, according to him, needs a "circuit-breaker" after a long time of political instability and economic decline.

After outlining his priorities in the internal politics, Burnham moved to foreign affairs. Here, he focused mainly on the ongoing Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing that despite a political change in the UK, the support for Ukraine will continue. He added that later on Monday he will call President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy to assure him of unwavering British support to his country. Afterwards he planned to make a call with US President Donald Trump.

Andy Burnham already attracted some criticism from his opponents. Firstly, he is the first Labour leader, who became PM without participating in some form of debate, running without opposition. Secondly, some of his critics point out that this way he could avoid answering questions about his unsuccessful policies in the past and how he plans to find the funding for his plans as a new Prime Minister.

His predecessor Keir Starmer made a farewell speech earlier on Monday. In it he said that UK has become a better place after his 2 years as a PM. His resignation was accepted by king Charles III in a formal procedure, after which the king met his successor and asked him to form a new government.

Now Burnham has to form a new government. So far the biggest mystery surrounds the question of who will be the new chancellor, as Rachel Reeves is the incumbent, though many think that she will be one of the first replaced as she is a strong supporter of Keir Starmer.
