OMPT Practice review: a free timed mock for every OMPT variant, and what it costs after that

Every autumn the same email lands in our inbox. An applicant has a conditional offer from a Dutch or Belgian business school, the offer says "OMPT-A, 75%", and the applicant had never heard of the OMPT until that sentence. Most of them last did maths at 16. The panic is real and, frankly, reasonable.

A new site called OMPT Practice is pitched squarely at those people: a free, timed, browser-scored mini-mock for each of the seven OMPT variants, no account needed, with paid full-length mocks behind it. I spent an afternoon with it. Here is what I found, including the bits that annoyed me.

What is the OMPT?

OMPT stands for Online Mathematics Placement Test. It is a remotely proctored maths exam, run by a Dutch company, that universities use when an applicant's school diploma does not prove enough maths for the programme. Business and economics programmes in the Netherlands lean on it heavily. So does KU Leuven, along with a handful of Nordic and Baltic schools and the two Portuguese Católicas.

There are seven variants, A through G, and they are wildly different. OMPT-A is 52 questions in 120 minutes and stops at differentiation. OMPT-B adds trigonometry and integration and stretches to 64 questions in 150 minutes. OMPT-D, the one engineering programmes ask for, is only 21 questions but you get three hours, because each one is a long, multi-step problem. C is the short entry-level test. E is the statistics one. F and G are rarer.

You sit it at home with your webcam and screen recorded, a passport held up to the camera first. Your own calculator stays in the drawer; the platform gives you a digital one. A single attempt costs €240 for most variants and €270 for D and F, results take about eight business days, and a failed attempt means paying the full fee again. That last fact is why nobody wants to walk in cold.

Why applicants panic about it

The syllabus is public but the exam is not. omptest.org publishes topic lists and sells its own mock, but there is no free bank of past papers the way there is for the SAT or A-levels.

And the pass mark is not the exam's. Each university draws its own line. Maastricht wants 75% for International Business. Arcada in Finland accepts 50%. KU Leuven asks 75% on the A for business but 60% on the D for engineering. An applicant with two offers might need two different scores on the same test, and most do not realise that until they read the fine print.

What OMPT Practice gives you for free

The headline offer is the free OMPT practice test for each variant. It is a tenth of the real exam, run at the real exam's per-question pace. For the A that means five questions in 12 minutes. For the D it is two questions and about 17 minutes, which tells you something about the D.

I tried the OMPT-A one. No sign-up wall, no card. You press "Start timer" and the countdown starts immediately. Every answer was a plain numeric entry box, no multiple choice, which matches the official on-screen format and is less forgiving than I expected: a sign error is simply wrong. A line under the questions reads "unanswered questions count as wrong", so skipping buys you nothing.

The five questions covered systems of linear equations, quadratics, functions, logarithms and differentiation. Nothing exotic. The functions one, roughly "f(x) = 3x − 6 gives output 9, what was the input", took me twenty seconds. The logarithm one took over three minutes, and that is the point. At 2.3 minutes a question, the timer is the exam. I finished with under a minute left and would have scored 80% if that pace held for 52 questions. It would not have held.

Scoring happens in the browser the moment you finish; the site says nothing is uploaded. You get a per-topic breakdown, a worked solution in plain tutor prose on each question, and a short "common mistake" note underneath. The note on the logarithm question described my wrong turn almost word for word.

Which OMPT do universities require?

This is the part of the site applicants will use most. The OMPT score requirements by university page lists 31 institutions across eight countries, 103 programme rows, each with the required variant, the minimum score, a source link and the date the row was last checked (every row I saw said July 2026). Fourteen of the institutions are Dutch. It is sortable, which sounds trivial until you have three offers open in three tabs.

If you still do not know which letter applies to you, the note Which OMPT test do I need? A–G, decoded is the fastest explainer I have read: business goes A, econometrics B, social sciences E, engineering D. Check your offer letter first, though. The site says so and so do we.

The paid layer: 28 full mocks and topic lessons

Behind the free mini-mocks sit 28 full-length OMPT mock tests: four "generations" per variant at the real question count and the real clock, the first two labelled foundation level and the last two exam level. They sell one generation at a time from €39.99 (€49.99 for D and F), with the fourth generation €10 more. The better value is the OMPT Practice bundle pricing: €79.98 buys two full mocks plus every lesson for the variant, one payment, VAT included, no subscription. For D and F the bundle is €99.98. Set that against omptest.org's own bundle, which adds one official mock and practice material to a test attempt for €385, or against a retake at €240, and the appeal is obvious.

The lessons sit alongside 24 OMPT topic drills across algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus and probability, six original problems each with worked solutions. Every topic page states which variants it applies to. Trig is flagged B, D and G only, which will save OMPT-C candidates a week of pointless revision.

The two tools worth ten minutes

The OMPT score estimator asks for your variant and your average on recent timed sets, then shows a band eight points wide on each side against published cutoffs. I put in my 80% and got a band that overlapped Maastricht's 75% line uncomfortably. Fair.

The study planner takes a variant and an exam date, spreads the syllabus over the weeks left with foundations first and timed sets last, and prints a weekly plan with drill links. It does not ask how many hours a week you have, which is a gap.

Where it falls short

It is a third-party prep tool. The questions are original, not leaked papers, and the only official mock is the one omptest.org sells. If your cutoff is tight, buy that too.

The free mini-mock is short. Five questions tell you whether you can hold 2.3 minutes a question for twelve minutes, which is a different question from holding it for two hours.

University cutoffs move. The table is dated per row, which is good practice, but a 75% in July 2026 can be a 70% by the next intake. Treat every number as a prompt to open the university's own admissions page.

And I could not find a refund policy on the plans page. At €79.98 that is a small bet, but it is a bet.

Should you use it?

If you have an OMPT in your offer letter, do the free mini-mock for your variant today. Twelve minutes. It will either calm you down or tell you which topic to fix first, and both beat another evening of dread.

Whether you then spend €79.98 depends on the gap between your mini-mock score and your university's line. If that gap is more than ten points, two full timed mocks with lessons is the cheapest serious preparation I have seen for this exam.
