Keir Starmer, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has announced his resignation on Monday. Though he will continue exercising his duties until a new candidate will be elected.

It is reported that his decision comes after increasing pressure from the Labour party, and a fall in popularity. Previously he ruled out such possibility, saying that he would continue to carry out his duties.

In his speech outside Prime Minister’s office, Starmer said that every his decision was guided by his love for his country. This includes his resignation. He added that the process of election of a new Labour Party leader will begin in July, with a new Prime Minister being elected in September. Until then, Starmer will remain as a caretaker Prime Minister.

Starmer’s decision prompted talks about the person who might become his successor as a Prime Minister of UK. Many point to Andy Burnham, former mayor of Greater Manchester, recently sworn in again as an MP. He gained a seat after winning a by election in Makerfield. This makes him eligible for the role, as under Labour Party rules, its leader has to be a MP.

Whoever might become the next Prime Minister, he will be the 7th in the last 10 years, as the political uncertainty in the United Kingdom continues.
