Business Diplomat: Beyond Economic Interest
A business diplomat considers not only economic interests but also diplomatic norms, cultural subtleties and business ethics, says Hojiakbar Mavlyanov. Interviewed by: Asst. Prof. İsmail Polat Interviewee: Hojiakbar Mavlyanov, Member of Parliament, Kyrgyzstan

Business is about interests, and that is not disputed. What distinguishes a business diplomat is what else he considers. In this part of its interview series, Business Diplomat presents the second half of Hojiakbar Mavlyanov’s definition.
First observation: more than economic interest
The business diplomat establishes relations “taking into consideration not only economic interests, but also diplomatic norms, cultural subtleties and business ethics rules.” The phrase “not only” admits that economic interest is real and makes clear that it is not the only consideration.
Second observation: three additional considerations
Diplomatic norms concern how relations are conducted. Cultural subtleties concern the fine differences between societies in expression, expectation and custom. Business ethics rules concern what is right to do. Together they define the manner in which interests are pursued.
The logic of the assessment
Economic interest is the starting point. Norms, culture and ethics shape the way it is pursued. A business diplomat is distinguished by holding all four in view.
The role of Business Diplomat
The platform’s mission is to give young people experience, bring a diplomatic order to the business world, and benefit states by revitalising the economy. The three additional considerations can serve as the three pillars of what the platform teaches. Business Diplomat can build its programmes around them.
Conclusion
A business diplomat pursues economic interests with attention to norms, cultural subtleties and ethics. Business Diplomat aims to teach this balance.
