Forgiveness, Community & Eid at the Indonesian Embassy

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period in which Muslims intensify their worship and fast from sunrise to sunset for 29 to 30 days, depending on the moon sighting. On Thursday, 19 March 2026, the Belgian Muslim community, alongside Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, and several other countries, sighted the hilal (new crescent moon) and officially confirmed the end of Ramadan. Indonesia and Singapore, following their own moon sighting, announced Eid al-Fitr for 21 March, with celebrations beginning on the evening of 20 March.

To mark this occasion, the Indonesian Embassy in Belgium generously invited EUReflect to join their Eid festivities. The celebration began with the Eid prayer, bringing together Indonesians and internationals in a moment of shared spirituality and gratitude. This was followed by a speech from the Indonesian ambassador to Belgium, and former ambassador to Jordan and Palestine, Mr. Andy Rachmianto, who warmly welcomed guests into the embassy and its traditions.

After the formal programme, the embassy opened its doors for an open house featuring Indonesian music and a generous buffet. Guests were invited to experience Indonesian culture through its food, hospitality, and the cherished tradition of eating together. The lively atmosphere, filled with conversation, laughter, and the sounds of music, reflected the spirit of Eid as a celebration of togetherness and community.

Speaking to EUReflect journalists, Mr. Rachmianto emphasised that Eid is a moment for Muslims around the world to seek and offer forgiveness for both intentional and unintentional wrongs, and to strengthen bonds within the community. Throughout the event, the ambassador and the entire embassy team were exceptionally welcoming, warm, and hospitable to all guests.
