Turkmenistan-China Energy Forum: 20 Years of Strategic Gas Cooperation
Ashgabat hosted an International Scientific and Practical Conference this week commemorating the 20th anniversary of strategic cooperation between Turkmenistan and China in the gas sector, underscoring the growing importance of bilateral energy ties for regional development and global supply security.
Held at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan, the forum brought together senior government officials, leading energy executives, researchers, and sector specialists to review two decades of cooperation and discuss future opportunities in investment, infrastructure, innovation, and workforce development.
High-Level Opening Session Highlights Strategic Partnership
The opening plenary session focused on “Turkmenistan-China: Strategic Energy Cooperation, Investment, and Development of the Gas Industry.” The discussion was moderated by Rahimberdi Jepbarov.
Speakers included Guvanch Agajanov, Ding Xuexiang, Maksat Babayev, and Dai Houliang. Participants emphasized that sustained energy dialogue and long-term investment remain essential to economic growth, connectivity, and energy resilience across Eurasia.
Galkynysh Agreement Signals Continued Expansion
One of the day’s key moments was the signing ceremony for the turnkey contract on Phase IV development of the Galkynysh Gas Field between Turkmengas and CNPC Amudarya Petroleum Company Ltd.. The agreement is widely viewed as a significant step in deepening operational cooperation and expanding one of the world’s major gas fields.
Focus on Resources, Infrastructure and Talent Development
The first thematic session examined Turkmenistan’s resource base, priority gas projects, and export infrastructure modernization. It was moderated by Stephen Travers and included contributions from experts representing Turkmengas, CNPC, and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation.
The second thematic session focused on human capital, scientific exchange, and educational cooperation. Speakers highlighted the importance of training highly qualified specialists, research collaboration, and technology transfer to support the next phase of industrial development.

The conference reflects the strategic role of Turkmenistan as a major natural gas producer and the continued importance of China as a long-term energy partner.
