UN peacekeeper killed with more injured in Lebanon

On Thursday, United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that as a result of shelling of the Marjayoun base in south of the country yesterday a peacekeeper died of his wounds. Two other servicemen remain in wounded state and are being treated.

In a statement UNIFIL informed, that the peacekeeper who died was a national of Serbia. After the base in which he served came under attack, he received emergency medical care before a helicopter evacuated him to a hospital in Beirut where he succumbed to his wounds. In the same statement the Force also reminded that an attack on UN peacekeepers is a violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701 and may be considered a war crime.

In the same statement UNIFIL called for ending the violence. Also, it was said that that the mission detects an increasing number of impacts and trajectories in south of the country. This contributes to incidents involving UNIFIL personnel, often caught in between the fighting. It is not yet clear who shelled the peacekeepers based and investigation is underway.

This happened just a day after a new ceasefire agreement was reached between Israel and Lebanon after talks in Washington. The agreement was rejected by Hezbollah which did not participate in talks. Israel used this as a justification for further strikes.

Since hostilities began anew in March 2026 UNIFIL lost 7 peacekeepers. The previous incident involved two peacekeepers from France who were killed in an ambush blamed on Hezbollah. Before that in March two Indonesian servicemen, one of whom died immediately while the other died later of wounds, with investigation holding Israel responsible.
