USA and Armenia agree to continue with the economic corridor plan

On Tuesday during the visit of the Secretary of State Marco Rubio the US along with Armenia have pledged to continue moving ahead with a planned corridor which will connect Azerbaijan with its exclave.

After a 4 day visit to India Marco Rubio met his Armenian colleague after the plane carrying the US delegation had to make a refueling stop at the capital of Yerevan. The project put forward by the current US President, officially called the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), is intended to connect Azerbaijan with its exclave territory of Nakhchivan through the territory of Armenia.

According to Rubio, he and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan made another step in the TRIPP project. During the signing ceremony US Secretary of State emphasized that as of now this is a biggest move toward implementing this project, the goal of which is to advance peace and to increase the prosperity both in Armenia and the region as a whole.

Despite this commentaries, the text of the signed document is unknown. As such, it can only be guessed what exactly is the biggest step forward that was talked about. According to framework laid out by the US Department of State in January 2026, a "TRIPP Development Company" will be created with 74% of the shares belonging to US. It will also benefit US companies per the mentioned framework.

This development is another one in the chain of events that signal Armenia’s intention to distance itself from Russia, which was previously regarded as an ally. But, after this alliance did not do anything substantial to prevent the loss of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakhregion to Azerbaijan, Armenian leadership represented by PM Nikol Pashinyan took the course of improving its relations with US and its neighbours, at the same time gradually leaving organisations linked to Russia such as the CSTO.
