Business Diplomat: Trade Reimagined

Asked for the first three things that come to mind at the name Business Diplomat, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Evkuran does not give three words. He gives three ideas, each a way of rethinking trade. In this part of its interview series, Business Diplomat presents them.

First idea: trade reconstructed
“The reconstruction of commercial activity as the most effective, sustainable and creative activity.”
Three qualities are named: effective, sustainable and creative. The word “reconstruction” suggests that trade is not to be abandoned but rebuilt on new foundations. Sustainability in particular implies that trade should be judged by what lasts and not only by what is gained at once.

Second idea: the whole picture
“Handling trade, together with the non-commercial elements that affect it, with a holistic approach.”
Trade does not happen alone. It is influenced by factors that are not commercial: laws, politics, culture, public opinion. A holistic approach means taking these into account together with prices and contracts.

Third idea: links
“Building links between trade and fields such as culture, politics and bureaucracy.”
The third idea turns the second into action. The business diplomat connects trade with the fields that surround it. Culture, politics and bureaucracy are the three examples; they are also the three areas where a commercial plan most often meets resistance.

The logic of the assessment
Trade is reconceived as effective, sustainable and creative. It is understood together with its non-commercial surroundings. And the business diplomat is the person who builds links between them.

The role of Business Diplomat
The platform’s mission is to give young people experience, bring a diplomatic order to the business world, and benefit states by revitalising the economy. Evkuran’s three ideas describe what a diplomatic order in business means: trade connected to culture, politics and administration. Business Diplomat can teach young professionals to think in this connected way.

Conclusion
A Business Diplomat reconceives trade as a connected, sustainable and creative activity. Business Diplomat aims to prepare young professionals to work in that way.
