Nauryz Celebration in Brussels

EUReflect was honoured to participate in the celebration of Nauryz, organised within the framework of Shanyraq Fest Brussels at the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Brussels. This event served not only as a festive gathering, but also as a meaningful platform for intercultural dialogue, diplomatic engagement, and the promotion of Central Asian heritage within the European context. By bringing together representatives from diverse diplomatic, cultural, and institutional backgrounds, the celebration highlighted the growing relevance of cultural diplomacy as a tool for strengthening mutual understanding and international cooperation.

As one of the most significant traditional holidays across Central Asia, Nauryz symbolises the arrival of spring, renewal, harmony, and communal solidarity. Rooted in centuries-old customs, it reflects values of hospitality, reconciliation, and collective well-being. For guests in Brussels, the occasion offered a unique opportunity to engage directly with the richness of Kazakh cultural traditions and to appreciate the broader civilisational heritage of the region. Events of this nature play an important role in preserving intangible cultural heritage while simultaneously introducing it to wider international audiences.

The programme was carefully curated to reflect both the historical depth and living vibrancy of Kazakh culture. Traditional folk games such as Asyk Atu and Togyz Qumalaq provided insight into the intellectual and recreational practices embedded in nomadic society, while also demonstrating the continued relevance of these customs today. A distinguished musical performance by artists of the Astana Philharmonic added an artistic dimension to the celebration, showcasing the sophistication of Kazakhstan’s contemporary cultural institutions. Guests were also invited to experience authentic national cuisine, an essential component of cultural identity and hospitality traditions.

The event was further enriched by the presence of distinguished diplomatic representatives, including Luc Devigne, members of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Brussels, and diplomats from Mongolia. Their participation underscored the significance of Nauryz as a unifying regional celebration that transcends national borders and reinforces shared historical and cultural ties across Eurasia. At the same time, the attendance of international partners reflected the growing importance of Central Asia in contemporary diplomatic and cultural networks.
