Europe Tests First Autonomous Military Convoy
Europe completed the final tests of its first autonomous military convoy in Spain under the EU-funded COMMANDS project. Coordinated by Spain’s Sener, the system uses AI, sensors, and 5G to enable autonomous navigation. The initiative marks a key step in the EU’s effort to modernize and strengthen its defense capabilities through automation and artificial intelligence.
Europe has successfully completed testing of its first fully autonomous military convoy, marking a major step forward in the continent’s defense innovation. The final demonstration took place in Seville under the European Union–funded COMMANDS project, coordinated by Spanish aerospace and defense company Sener.
The COMMANDS consortium (Convoy Operations with Manned-unManneD Systems) involves 21 European partnersand received €24.8 million in funding from the European Defence Fund. The project showcased a fleet of autonomous ground vehicles capable of coordinated logistics operations, guided by AI-driven navigation systems and supported by 5G connectivity.
At the core of the demonstration was Sener’s Naviground system — a platform that combines sensors, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced telecommunication networks. This technology enables military vehicles to navigate autonomously even in “unstructured” environments or under degraded satellite conditions. Sener previously tested Naviground on various military vehicles, including tanks and logistics units.
According to the European Commission, the initiative aligns with the EU’s goal of strengthening defense capabilities by accelerating the development of autonomous and AI-enabled systems. The Commission has identified autonomous drones, unmanned aerial systems, and AI-based defense technologies as key priorities for the bloc’s future military readiness.

The successful completion of the autonomous convoy tests highlights Europe’s growing ambition to reduce reliance on external defense technologies. As European nations invest in AI and autonomous systems, projects like COMMANDSmay serve as a blueprint for the next generation of integrated military operations across the continent.
