Moroccan Sahara: A Historic Turning Point Driven by Royal Leadership

On Friday, October 31, 2025, the Moroccan Sahara issue entered a “historically decisive phase” after decades of stalemate, culminating in a UN victory in favor of the autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty.

Indeed, the UN Security Council adopted a historic resolution endorsing autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.

Passed with 11 votes in favor, none against, and 3 abstentions (Russia, China, and Pakistan) — with Algeria refusing to participate in the vote — the resolution was sponsored by the United States and actively supported by major powers.

This resolution radically alters the parameters that had previously guided the management of the Sahara issue, marking explicit recognition of the seriousness and credibility of Morocco’s proposal.

Nearly two decades after its presentation, Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara has emerged on the international stage as a benchmark for pragmatic diplomacy.

Designed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2007, the proposal reflects both the Kingdom’s firmness on sovereignty and its openness to dialogue.

Foreign Minister Mr. Nasser Bourita reiterated this in a special broadcast aired Saturday evening on Moroccan channel 2M: “The Royal approach is based on a clear and strategic vision, which has led to recognition by influential countries of the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, notably the United States and France, thanks to His Majesty the King’s daily oversight and direct engagement with heads of state on this matter.”

Support continues to grow: influential countries, regional institutions, and strategic partners now acknowledge the relevance of this approach. This consensus is no coincidence, but the result of patient, consistent, and visionary royal diplomacy.

On the ground, the initiative has sparked unprecedented development in the southern provinces: massive investments, modern infrastructure, and continuous improvement in living conditions.

Autonomy thus emerges not only as a peace solution but also as a royal triumph — a symbol of the foresight, determination, and leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has transformed a sovereignty issue into a driver of stability and development in service of Morocco’s unity and prosperity.
