The Netherlands is strengthening its position as a global leader in agricultural technology by expanding the use of artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous greenhouses, and data-driven farming systems.

One of the most significant developments is the AGROS II project led by Wageningen University & Research. The initiative aims to advance autonomous greenhouse production by integrating cameras, sensors, artificial intelligence, and Digital Twin technology. These systems can continuously monitor crops, growing conditions, and greenhouse climates while supporting more precise production decisions.

Robotics is another important component of the Dutch agricultural transformation. Wageningen researchers are developing simulated greenhouse environments to accelerate the development of harvesting robots. Such technologies could reduce dependence on manual labour while improving efficiency in high-value greenhouse production.

Artificial intelligence is also moving beyond individual farms. Through the AgriScienceFM initiative, researchers are developing advanced AI models capable of understanding complex agricultural systems. Potential applications include soil and water management, pest and disease control, autonomous harvesting, and agricultural decision-making.

The country's broader policy direction supports this technological shift. The Dutch 2026–2030 Coalition Agreementidentifies technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, sensors, robotics and biotechnology as important elements in the future of food production.

The emerging model shows that the Netherlands is seeking to maintain its agricultural competitiveness not simply through production volumes, but through technology, efficiency and knowledge-intensive agriculture. As autonomous greenhouses, AI and agricultural robots become more widespread, Dutch agricultural technology could become an increasingly important component of the country's international economic position.
