U.S. Expands Diplomatic Role in Gaza Under Fagin’s Leadership

The announcement followed a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the Civil-Military Coordination Center in southern Tel Aviv, where he pledged to deploy additional American diplomats to join approximately 200 U.S. soldiers stationed at the center, according to Reuters.Who is Steven Fagin?Fagin brings over two decades of extensive diplomatic experience, having held prominent positions in Baghdad, Erbil, Brussels, and several other countries. He currently serves as the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, operating from outside the country due to the security situation in Sanaa and the Houthi control over the capital.Fluent in Arabic, Kurdish, and Russian, Fagin joined the U.S. diplomatic corps in 1997. He has held significant roles in the United States, including Director of the Office of Iranian Affairs at the State Department (2015-2018), Director of the Office of Regional Affairs for South and Central Asia (2013-2015), and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in 2015.Internationally, Fagin served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad (2020-2021) and Consul General in Erbil, in addition to diplomatic assignments in Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Georgia, and Egypt.Civil-Military Coordination CenterThe center, located near the city of Kiryat Gat, northeast of Gaza, was inaugurated on October 17, 2025, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Patrick Frank, commander of U.S. Army forces in the region.
