Business Diplomat: Read Public Opinion

Speaking to the public is one skill. Understanding what the public thinks is another. In this part of its interview series, Business Diplomat presents Gulbahor Saidganiyeva’s warning about the cost of ignoring both.

First observation: the risk
She states the risk plainly: if there is no proper dialogue with the public, and if public opinion is not studied, a business can lose a great deal. The loss in question is a commercial one, not only a reputational one.

Second observation: two obligations
Her warning contains two obligations. The first is to engage with the public correctly, which means communicating clearly and responsibly. The second is to study public opinion, which means listening before speaking. A company that only transmits messages misses how those messages are received.

The logic of the assessment
Public opinion shapes commercial outcomes: what customers buy, what partners are willing to associate with and which companies investors trust. A business that studies it can adjust before a problem becomes a crisis. A business that ignores it learns of the problem when the damage is done.

The role of Business Diplomat
For a platform that aims to give young people experience, bring a diplomatic order to the business world, and benefit states by revitalising the economy, listening to the public is a core diplomatic habit. Training in dialogue and in reading public sentiment is as practical for a business diplomat as training in negotiation.

Conclusion
Dialogue with the public and attention to its opinion protect a business from avoidable losses. Saidganiyeva presents both as part of doing business well.
