Malaysia Boosts Medical Tourism
Malaysia is strengthening its international medical tourism strategy through closer cooperation between Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC).
The two government-linked bodies are working together to promote Malaysia as a preferred destination for healthcare travel while supporting the country’s wider tourism objectives under Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) and Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 (MYMT2026).
A Coordinated Strategy
The cooperation focuses on coordinating promotional activities in selected international markets. These include ASEAN, South Asia, East Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
By combining Tourism Malaysia’s international tourism promotion network with MHTC’s healthcare expertise, the initiative creates a coordinated platform for presenting Malaysia’s medical and wellness services to potential healthcare travellers.
The strategy also reflects Malaysia’s broader effort to attract high-value international visitors and increase tourism receipts through specialised tourism segments.
Global Market Expansion
Malaysia is targeting markets where demand for international healthcare services and travel is developing. Joint promotional campaigns are expected to strengthen awareness of Malaysian healthcare providers while connecting medical tourism with the country's wider tourism offering.
The approach allows Malaysia to present healthcare travel alongside its established strengths in hospitality, culture, food and tourism experiences.
Supporting VM2026
The partnership is closely connected with the objectives of Visit Malaysia 2026. Tourism Malaysia describes medical tourism as an important segment for attracting quality visitors and supporting tourism receipts.
At the same time, MYMT2026 gives Malaysia an additional international platform to highlight its healthcare capabilities and wellness experiences.
Through coordinated promotion and targeted international engagement, Malaysia is positioning medical tourism as an increasingly important part of its long-term tourism strategy.
