Malaysia Expands Heart Tourism

Malaysia is strengthening its position in regional medical tourism through a new strategic partnership connecting air connectivity, specialised cardiac care and national tourism promotion.

Batik Air Malaysia and the Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) have launched a collaboration supported by Tourism Malaysia to improve access to cardiovascular healthcare and strengthen Malaysia’s healthcare travel ecosystem.

The partnership focuses on making healthcare travel more accessible for international patients, particularly those travelling to Malaysia for specialised cardiovascular and thoracic treatment. By bringing together an airline, a specialised national cardiac institution and the country’s tourism authority, the initiative connects transportation and healthcare within a broader medical tourism strategy.

Connecting Travel and Healthcare

IJN is Malaysia’s national heart centre and provides specialised cardiovascular and thoracic services to patients from Malaysia and overseas. Under the new cooperation, international patients and their families can benefit from stronger coordination between air travel and access to specialised medical services.

The initiative also highlights the importance of preventive healthcare. Alongside treatment, the partners are promoting early screening, preventive care and greater awareness of cardiovascular health.

For international visitors, easier connectivity can play an important role in the healthcare travel experience. Patients travelling across borders often require reliable transportation, medical coordination and convenient access to healthcare facilities.

Supporting Malaysia’s Medical Tourism Strategy

The collaboration forms part of Malaysia’s wider strategy to expand medical and wellness tourism. Tourism Malaysia has identified healthcare travel as one of its key niche tourism segments under Visit Malaysia 2026, which has been extended through 2027.

The initiative also supports the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 (MYMT 2026) campaign, which seeks to promote Malaysia’s healthcare capabilities to international markets.

According to figures cited by Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia recorded approximately 1.85 million healthcare travellers in 2025, generating around RM3.35 billion in revenue and exceeding the country’s RM3 billion target.

Strengthening Regional Healthcare Travel

The partnership also reinforces Malaysia’s role as a destination for patients from ASEAN, South Asia and other international markets.

By combining specialised medical expertise with air connectivity and tourism promotion, Malaysia is developing a more integrated healthcare travel model. The approach allows medical tourism to become part of the country’s wider tourism ecosystem while supporting international access to specialised healthcare.

With the partnership scheduled to continue until 30 April 2027, the initiative provides another platform for Malaysia to strengthen its healthcare tourism strategy during the Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 period.
