This issue has become widely known as “Ozempic butt,” a term used to describe the loss of fat, muscle, and tissue volume that can leave certain areas of the body appearing deflated or sagging.

A new experimental drug called apitegromab may offer a solution. According to research published in the journal Nature Medicine, the treatment appears to help patients preserve muscle while continuing to lose body fat. Apitegromab works by blocking a protein involved in muscle breakdown. By reducing this process, the drug helps protect lean body mass while allowing fat loss to continue. Researchers are also investigating its potential use in treating muscle-related disorders such as spinal muscular atrophy.

Currently, apitegromab remains an experimental treatment available only through clinical trials and is administered intravenously. The manufacturer is exploring the possibility of developing a self-injection version that could be used similarly to existing weight-loss injections.

Experts Call for Further Research and Healthy Lifestyle Measures

Medical experts have welcomed the findings but caution that more evidence is needed before drawing definitive conclusions.

Similarly, Dr. Brendan Gabriel from the University of Aberdeen noted that the treatment may not be necessary for every individual using GLP-1 medications. However, it could prove valuable for patients who experience particularly rapid muscle loss.

Regardless of future pharmaceutical developments, experts continue to recommend strength training and adequate protein intake for anyone undergoing significant weight loss. Activities such as weightlifting, resistance-band exercises, cycling, stair climbing, yoga, dancing, and bodyweight exercises can help maintain muscle strength. Nutritional guidance also suggests consuming approximately 20–40 grams of protein per meal to support muscle preservation and growth.
