A new clinical prediction tool developed from data involving more than 38,000 heart failure patients could help doctors identify which treatments are most likely to benefit individual patients while reducing the risk of complications.

A new clinical prediction tool could change how doctors select and manage medications for people living with heart failure. Presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2026 and published simultaneously in Nature Medicine, the research uses individual patient data from nine major heart failure trials involving 38,753 participants.
The tool is designed to address a common challenge in heart failure treatment: patients can respond very differently to the same medication. A drug that produces a significant benefit for one patient may cause complications for another, particularly when blood pressure, kidney function or potassium levels are affected.
Instead of relying solely on population-level averages, the new model attempts to estimate the likely effects of different treatments for individual patients. This could give clinicians a more detailed picture of the potential benefits and risks before adjusting a patient's medication.
The importance of this approach lies in the growing role of personalized medicine. Heart failure is not a single uniform condition, and patients often have different combinations of cardiovascular and other health problems. A treatment strategy based on individual characteristics could therefore improve the balance between therapeutic benefit and adverse effects.
The research is also significant because it draws on data from multiple large clinical trials rather than a small single-centre study. This provides a broader evidence base for developing a predictive tool that could eventually be integrated into clinical decision-making.
However, such systems are not intended to replace physicians. Their value will depend on how accurately they perform across different patient populations and how easily they can be incorporated into everyday healthcare settings.
If validated and successfully implemented, the technology could represent an important step toward more individualized heart failure care, allowing doctors to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach when selecting and adjusting treatments.
