Indonesia Boosts Wellness Tourism

Indonesia is strengthening its health tourism strategy through closer cooperation between the country’s tourism and health authorities.

The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) and the Ministry of Tourism agreed to expand cooperation supporting the development of wellness tourism and medical tourism during a meeting in Jakarta on 23 June 2026.

The initiative reflects Indonesia’s growing focus on health-based tourism as a potential driver of economic growth and a complementary part of the country’s tourism offering.

Connecting Health and Tourism

The cooperation aims to bring together Indonesia’s healthcare capabilities and tourism resources.

The two institutions are exploring ways to support health-oriented tourism products, improve coordination and encourage collaboration across the healthcare, tourism and local business sectors.

Indonesia also sees an opportunity to combine modern medical facilities with its traditional wellness heritage, including jamu, the country’s long-established herbal tradition.

Supporting Wellness Growth

Wellness tourism is becoming an increasingly important part of Indonesia’s tourism development agenda.

The partnership includes plans to support Wellfest 2026, an annual wellness-focused event designed to promote healthy lifestyles, health products and local businesses operating in wellness, cosmetics and processed food.

The initiative also includes support for herbal micro, small and medium-sized enterprises located in tourism villages, creating links between local economic development and wellness tourism.

Building a Health Tourism Ecosystem

Indonesia’s approach goes beyond medical treatment alone. The country is developing a broader ecosystem that brings together healthcare, wellness, traditional knowledge, tourism destinations and local businesses.

This strategy is particularly relevant to destinations such as Bali, where health tourism infrastructure is developing alongside the island’s established international tourism profile.

Indonesia’s health tourism strategy therefore combines modern healthcare services with wellness experiences and local cultural traditions, strengthening the country’s ambition to develop a distinctive position in the international health tourism market.
