Germany has begun a major programme to modernise its hospital infrastructure as part of a broader effort to prepare the healthcare system for the future.
The Hospital Transformation Fund became operational in January 2026 and is designed to finance structural changes in Germany’s hospital system. Up to €50 billion is planned to be made available through 2035, with the federal government providing €29 billion of the total funding.
A Major Investment
The transformation fund represents one of the largest planned investments in Germany’s hospital infrastructure.
Funding is intended to support structural modernisation and help hospitals adapt to changing healthcare needs. The programme forms part of the federal government’s broader healthcare reform agenda, which also includes changes to digital healthcare, long-term care and pharmaceutical policy.
