Indonesia Builds Health Tourism

Indonesia is taking steps to strengthen its health tourism sector through closer cooperation between the tourism and healthcare industries.

The Ministry of Tourism is currently developing and strengthening a cross-sector strategy for health tourism, bringing together government institutions, healthcare organisations and tourism stakeholders. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s ambition to build a more integrated health tourism ecosystem.

A Cross-Sector Approach

The strategy is being developed through discussions between the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Health, Jakarta health authorities, tourism and creative economy officials, hospital associations and representatives of healthcare institutions.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, closer coordination between tourism and healthcare is essential for creating an ecosystem in which the two sectors can support each other.

This approach brings medical services together with tourism infrastructure, destination management and visitor services.

Strengthening Indonesia’s Position

Health tourism offers Indonesia an opportunity to combine its healthcare capabilities with its established tourism destinations.

The government is particularly interested in developing an ecosystem that connects medical services with tourism experiences, allowing international visitors to access healthcare while also benefiting from Indonesia’s hospitality, culture and destinations.

Bali and Jakarta are among the locations with significant potential for this development, while the Sanur Special Economic Zone is emerging as an important centre for Indonesia’s health tourism ambitions.

Building a Long-Term Strategy

The new strategy reflects Indonesia’s effort to move beyond individual healthcare facilities and develop a more coordinated national approach.

Government institutions and industry representatives are working together to identify opportunities for cooperation, improve connections between sectors and strengthen Indonesia’s attractiveness as a health tourism destination.

The development of the strategy comes as Indonesia continues to expand healthcare infrastructure and investment in destinations such as Bali. In the Sanur Special Economic Zone, the government is developing an integrated health tourism ecosystem, including international-standard healthcare facilities.

Indonesia’s latest initiative therefore places collaboration, healthcare services and tourism development at the centre of its emerging health tourism strategy.
