Indonesia Expands Wellness Tourism
Indonesia is strengthening its wellness tourism sector as part of its strategy to develop higher-quality and more competitive tourism.
The Ministry of Tourism is developing a sustainable wellness tourism business ecosystem covering destinations, service standards, product innovation, investment, promotion and human resources. The initiative aims to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the growing international wellness tourism market.
A Wider Tourism Strategy
Indonesia sees wellness tourism as an important part of its wider quality tourism strategy.
Rather than focusing only on destination visits, wellness tourism offers travellers opportunities to combine travel with health, relaxation, sports and personal wellbeing. This creates opportunities for destinations to develop more experience-based tourism products.
The Ministry of Tourism considers wellness tourism particularly valuable because travellers seeking wellness experiences can spend more time at destinations and contribute to higher visitor expenditure.
Targeting Younger Travellers
The Indonesian government is also focusing on Millennial and Gen Z travellers.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, younger travellers increasingly seek experiences beyond traditional sightseeing. Events, sports, wellness activities and authentic experiences are becoming important elements of their travel choices.
Indonesia therefore aims to develop wellness products that respond to these changing preferences while connecting wellness with the country’s cultural and natural tourism assets.
Building Global Competitiveness
The strategy includes improvements across the entire wellness tourism ecosystem.
These efforts cover destination development, service standards, investment opportunities, promotion and workforce capacity. By strengthening these areas simultaneously, Indonesia aims to create a more consistent and internationally competitive wellness tourism offering.
According to 2024 data cited by the Ministry, wellness tourism activities accounted for 13.35% of foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia. The Global Wellness Institute also estimated the global wellness economy at US$6.8 trillion in 2024, with further growth projected toward 2029.
Indonesia is therefore positioning wellness tourism as a strategic growth area within its broader tourism agenda. By combining destination development, innovation and international promotion, the country aims to attract visitors seeking meaningful and high-quality travel experiences.
