EU and China agree deal to curb hybrid car exports to bloc
Brussels says Chinese hybrid vehicle shipments could fall by more than half over four years under a landmark agreement reached after months of negotiations.

The EU has reached a landmark agreement with China to halve Chinese hybrid car exports to the bloc over four years, Brussels said, amid concerns that rising sales threaten parts of Europe's car industry.
What the deal covers
Trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said the agreement could prevent millions of Chinese vehicles from entering the European market over the next four years. He described it as the first deal of its kind.
According to Brussels, Chinese hybrid shipments could fall by more than half across that period. The EU said the arrangement followed intense negotiations with China that began in June, aimed at curbing a trade deficit running at €1.18bn a day.
Concern over European jobs
The talks were driven by fears that surging Chinese hybrid sales could kill off parts of the European car industry and put jobs at risk.
The deal focuses on hybrids rather than the battery-electric vehicles that have dominated recent EU-China trade tensions. Details of how the reduction would be enforced were not set out in the statements.
Why it matters for Europe
Europe's car industry is a major employer and a politically sensitive sector, and the agreement is intended to give domestic manufacturers room to adjust to Chinese competition.
The deal also tests whether Brussels can manage trade disputes with Beijing through negotiation rather than tariffs. If the promised reduction materialises, it could become a template for other sectors where the EU sees a growing trade imbalance.
